When it comes to a frugal fire place perk up, start with the obvious. Step back and take an objective look a the visual condition of the fire place front. Are the brick or marble surfaces soot and smoke stained making them dingy and dull?
Start With Basic Fireplace Clean Up
Though there are plenty of commercial products designed to remove the common soot residue on fireplace fronts, there is a frugal cleaning method that combines common household ingredients that may even be more effective.
Mix, in a small bowl or bucket, equal parts of dishwashing liquid and table salt; one cup to one cup should be plenty. Add just enough water to turn the mixture into a heavy, creamy paste. Cover all areas within proximity of the fireplace to avoid spill damage. Apply, and rub in paste directly on the surface with an old rag. Allow this frugal home made paste to work on the surface for approximately twenty minutes.
