Homeopathy uses natural substances from the plant, animal and mineral kingdoms to stimulate the body’s healing mechanism. The homeopathic theory holds that remedies made from minerals have far-reaching and slow-acting effects and treat deep-seated conditions, notes homeopath David Little. Chronic issues often involve multiple layers of symptoms, so selecting the appropriate remedy is generally best left to a skilled homeopath.

Sulphur

Derived from the mineral sulfur, also known as brimstone, sulphur works especially well on chronic diseases, particularly when other remedies fail to act, according to Alan V. Schmukler in his book Homeopathy: An A to Z Home Handbook. This remedy addresses the symptoms commonly associated with brimstone--a burning sensation, foul odor and reddened, irritated skin. Heat makes the symptoms worse, but fresh air relieves them. Homeopaths prescribe sulphur to treat a wide range of diseases, including skin conditions, digestive upset, earaches, conjunctivitis and insomnia. Sulphur also is used to address psychological issues such as forgetfulness, depression, laziness and selfishness.

Phosphorus

Phosphorus, made from the mineral of the same name, also addresses symptoms of burning. Nausea and vomiting, asthma or a wet cough indicate this remedy, as do anemia or excessive bleeding such as a heavy menstrual flow, nosebleed or a small cut that bleeds profusely. Warm food or drink and thunderstorms aggravate the symptoms, according to the Hmedicine Materia Medica. People who might need phosphorus dislike solitude and may fear death.
